Tips For Gardening In Winter
When the temperatures start to drop and the days get shorter, many gardeners put their tools away and wait for spring. But there are plenty of things you can do in the garden during winter! Here are some pointers to get you going.
- Keep on top of the leaves. Fallen leaves can smother plants and encourage fungal diseases, so it’s important to keep on top of them. Use a leaf blower or rake them into a pile and compost them.
- Protect your plants. If you’re expecting a cold snap, cover up tender plants with horticultural fleece or bubble wrap. You can also move pots into a sheltered spot.
- Sow some winter vegetables. There are plenty of winter vegetables you can sow now, including kale, Brussels sprouts, and winter lettuce. Check out our guide to winter sowing for more information.
- Plant some spring bulbs. Bulb planting in the winter for spring blooms is ideal. For best results, plant them in well-drained soil in a sunny spot.
- Keep on top of the weeds. Weeds will continue to grow in winter, so it’s important to keep on top of them. Pull them up by hand or use a weedkiller.
- Prune fruit trees. Fruit trees should be pruned in the winter. This will encourage them to produce more fruit next year.
- Check your equipment. Make sure your garden tools are in good condition and sharpened before you put them away for the winter. This will make them easier to use next spring.
- Plan ahead. Use this time to plan your garden for next year. Draw up a planting plan and order any seeds or plants you need.
